General Requirements for Canadian Permanent Residency

Eligibility under a PR program: You must apply under a specific immigration program. Each has unique criteria.
Admissibility:

No serious criminal record
No medical conditions that would pose a public health risk or excessive demand on health services
No misrepresentation in your application
Intention to reside outside Quebec (unless applying through Quebec): Most federal programs require you to settle outside Quebec, which has its own selection system.

🔑 Main Immigration Programs for Permanent Residency

1. Express Entry (for skilled workers)
Includes three streams:

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Minimum Requirements:

Skilled work experience (at least 1 year, full-time equivalent, within the last 10 years)
Language proficiency (English or French – tested via IELTS/CELPIP or TEF)
Education (secondary or post-secondary, assessed if obtained outside Canada)
Proof of funds (unless you have a valid job offer or are already in Canada)
2. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
Each province/territory nominates individuals based on their economic needs.
You must settle in the province that nominates you.
3. Family Sponsorship
For spouses, common-law partners, dependent children, parents, and grandparents.
The sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or PR and meet income requirements.
4. Quebec-Selected Skilled Workers
You must apply to the Quebec government first.
If selected, you apply to IRCC for PR.
5. Start-Up Visa Program
For entrepreneurs with the support of a designated organization
Must meet language, business ownership, and financial requirements
6. Caregiver Programs
For those providing care to children, elderly, or people with high medical needs
Work experience in Canada is required
7. Refugee or Humanitarian Programs
For those needing protection or facing human rights abuses
